Bandcamp EP#12 – Xmas Special!

Howdy Ranchers,

Merry Christmas Ranchers. We wanted to give you something a bit special this year to say thanks for the support.

Not only does this EP have four tracks (three exclusive) but two of them were specially recorded for you fine folks. Thanks again friends, your Ranch investment is going to pay off big time in 2022. This is just the start, you’ll see.

Season’s Greetin’ – I done wrote a sad Christmas tune, for which Foxy came up with the title.Xmas Ithmus was a track included on the 2013 World of Fox album ‘Borrowed Times’, originally recorded for Where It’s At Is Where You Are Records for their compilation ‘Christmastime, Approximately’. Last Christmas – another specially recorded Xmas downer, taking Wham in the lo-fi alt-country direction Ridgeley was always pushing for. In the Valley was recorded in 2002 by The Toques and intended for inclusion in John Peel’s Christmas show. The band did not send off the CD in time.

Have a cool yule y’all Doc x

New release – “American Portions: Side Orders”

Howdy bab,

Our latest release hits the shelves today. It’s a 4-track EP of tracks from the American Portions album sessions, and a companion piece to that record.

We kick off with a different, slightly quicker version of REM‘s Shiny Happy People to the one that appeared on the May 2021 album, and then we change gears again for a breakneck race through She Don’t Use Jelly by The Flaming Lips. Next up is a tear-jerker, Death Cab For Cutie‘s I Will Possess Your Heart, before we finish up with an 11-minute (!) ambient country ride through the desert with Queens of the Stone Age‘s Feelgood Hit of the Summer. Buckle up!

The EP is available as a CD and download from our Bandcamp page.

You can also find the EP on all the usual streaming services, such as Spotify.

We hope you like the EP, and the whole bunch of stuff we’ve recorded around American Portions. These sessions have been our favourite ones to date. We moved into our own studio space in November 2019, got locked out of it for several months from March 2020 onwards, and finally got back towards the end of the year. This whole record was made in that building, from initial demos and rehearsals, through to recording the final overdubs. We’re mighty proud of what we done did.

And we’ve got big plans for 2022. There will be a new record in March, and – if all goes the way we’re hoping – another before the end of the year. You can get on board with all that by joining the Independent Country Bandcamp Ranch. £25 a year gets you everything we’ve ever done, everything we will do, 10% of physical products and merch, PLUS an EP every month of the year featuring tracks exclusive to Ranchers. Get stuck in here.

Thanks for all you kind words, gig bookings, purchases, and general support. We appreciate it.

Love from,

CHiPs, Randy, Doc, The Swede, Bobby P and Magic Dave.

Bandcamp EP#11

Howdy Ranchers,

Doc here with another EP for you.

This month our spirit animal, Magic Dave, slide player and vibe dealer, makes his Bandcamp ranch debut. Dave threw his hat in the ring for LP3 with this great wee demo for Belly’s Feed the Tree. One of these days Dave and me are going to do an album of two chord songs featuring endless multiple guitar licks and it’s going to amaze you. Some Girls II, basically. Anyway, this demo isn’t far from what happened on the album, but you can compare to hear the IC process of evolution.

The practice room acoustic version of “International Bright Young Thing” features the usual unfair pressure and mocking I get around the stupid bloody ‘solo’ solo. The reason for the laughter is me indignantly pointing out I had recovered the situation this time and should be receiving praise, not being mocked. Unfair.

Finally, my home demo of “Girl With the Loneliest Eyes” which is quite a bit different to how it ended up. I’m always pitching for a jaunty country waltz but I never get it. Also unfair.

Keep on truckin’, Doc.

Bandcamp #EP10 out today.

Howdy Ranchers,

Doc here with another EP for you.

The demo of New Order’s ”True Faith” is pretty much exactly how it ended up on the 1st LP and when we play it live… and still sounds good to me. Harks back to the original concept, should you wish to call it that, of indie lyrics plus country tune equals IC. In this case, “Sunday Morning Coming Down”. After a while, that idea became too limiting for the songwriters in the band, so most of the tunes these days are written like new songs (albeit occasionally somewhat inspired ones). The Swede and me, Doc, also throw ideas into the pile and some just get forgotten. This version of Gene’s “Olympian” is a good listen in its own right. Finally my brother Ken Docherty and I did an acoustic album you used to be able to get on Spotify. All live in the studio, it was actually pretty great, he’s a brilliant songwriter (it’s not on Spotify anymore I’m afraid). This version of Clarence Ashley’s mysterious “Coo Coo Bird” shows a bit of where I’m coming from.

Keep on truckin’, Doc.
